We are looking for a Chief Scientist to grow the organization, drive the scientific development of the Institute and provide leadership to its team of scientists. A successful candidate will be joining a friendly, supportive and collaborative team of professionals who are dedicated to the radiation safety mission of the Institute.
The Chief Scientist must be an experienced scientist with a graduate degree in Physics (PhD is an asset) or in a related field and a recognized reputation for scientific integrity. The applicant must be highly knowledgeable in the field of radiation science, with at least 10 years practical field experience. We are looking for strong leadership and management skills as well as strong communications and interpersonal skills.
The position is located at our Toronto office. This is a full time position. Some travel will be required.

Job Description
Reporting to the President and CEO, the Chief Scientist will lead and oversee all scientific and technical work of the Institute at the National Educational Center and at the National Laboratories. He/she will have partial accountability for fund development activities, both with regard to consulting engagements and public grant moneys. The Chief Scientist will represent the Institute as senior technical person with external agencies. Provide leadership to the Institute’s scientific staff and participate in strategic direction of the Institute’s priorities and work programs as a member of the management team.
Key Responsibilities
- ensure scientific integrity, quality and successful delivery of the RSIC consulting projects, educational products, select awareness initiatives and all National Laboratory’s services
- carry out and maintain all measures necessary to ensure an efficient and effective Personal Alpha Dosimetry Service to the highest professional and scientific standards, and ensure that the Institute’s Dosimetry Service meets its CNSC licence requirements
- supervise, develop and evaluate the ongoing performance of professional scientists at both locations
- contribute to the Institute’s strategic direction
- drive long-term growth by developing organizational competencies in the field of radiation safety
- actively seek new products/services
- provide scientific advice to the President and CEO, the Board, CFO and Executive Director
- initiate and/or provide input for business proposals and grant applications
- respond to public and media enquiries related to radiation safety
- assist with teaching of radiation safety courses
- prepare, review and/or contribute to various reports (e.g. to the Board of Governors, clients and Grant Providers), media articles and technical papers.
- keep abreast of radiation safety news and developments, build partner networks and represent the Institute at conferences, technical meetings and trade shows
- as key member of the management team, will also be responsible for business development and organizational growth initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Minimum M.Sc. degree in physics or closely related field ( PhD is an asset)
- Minimum of ten years experience in a related field including several years of management and supervisory experience
- Business development / grant proposal development experience
- Expert knowledge in the field of radiation science
- Strong working knowledge of the instrumentation used in the measurement of radiation
- Proven experience leading technical staff
- Strong project leadership skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent analytical, problem solving and critical skills
- Proficient in delivering educational presentations and formal training material
- Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office applications, in particular, Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
- English essential
Desired Qualifications and Experience
- Specialization in health, medical, laser, nuclear, and/or applied physics
- Experience in teaching
- Experience in scientific data analysis
- Experience in writing technical reports and publications
- Experience in writing proposals
- Knowledge of CNSC Regulations and other regulatory requirements
- Bilingual (English/French) is an asset
