Our Facilities and People

The Radiation Safety Institute of Canada operates the first Canadian AARST-NRPP accredited secondary reference radon chamber. Our radon chamber, first developed to support the Institute’s federally licensed Personal Alpha Dosimetry Service, has been in operation for more than 35 years.

With over 20 years of experience in the field, Brian Bjorndal, Director of our National Laboratories, is responsible for Radon Chamber operations. He is supported by a team of scientific/technical professionals with expertise in radon and radon progeny measurement.

Services

The Radiation Safety Institute of Canada National Laboratories, located in Saskatoon, SK, offers expert Radon Chamber services to radon measurement and mitigation professionals and to manufacturers of radon and radon progeny measuring instruments. Services include:

• Calibration of Continuous Radon Monitors (CRM)

How to Order Radon Chamber services:

1. Complete a Radon Chamber Test Requisition Form. Ensure to include your contact information and return shipping address on the form.
2. Securely package your instruments and ship the instruments to our National Laboratories in Saskatoon. Ensure to include any necessary accessories with the instrument(s) and a copy of the Radon Chamber Test Requisition Form with the instrument(s).
3. Upon receipt of your instrument(s) we will inspect the shipment, and schedule to place your instrument(s) in our radon chamber. For continuous radon monitors the standard exposure period is 96 hours. Passive devices (e.g. alpha track detectors) are typically exposed to an equivalent exposure of 200 Bq/m³ over 90 days. Alternate exposure conditions may be requested.
4. Once the exposures have been completed, calibration/performance reports will be prepared and included with the instrument(s). As appropriate, calibration stickers are attached to the instrument(s).
5. The instrument(s) are then packaged and shipped back to you typically using the same packaging the instrument(s) were shipped to us in.
6. After the tests have been completed, we will invoice you for the costs of the tests and return shipping (as applicable). Applicable taxes will be added in the service costs.

The Radiation Safety Institute is an authorized calibration facility for AIRTHINGS, SunRADON and Ecosense continuous radon monitors.

Calibration of Continuous Radon Monitors (CRM)

In accordance with the C-NRPP quality assurance requirements CRMs should be tested once a year. An annual performance test ensures your CRM is working properly and provides confidence that you are providing your clients with accurate test results and advice. Annual performance tests also protect radon measurement professionals from unnecessary liabilities. To confirm and/or determine the calibration of continuous radon monitors the devices are exposed to a predetermined radon concentration. CRMs that agree with our reference system, within +/-25%, are considered to be operating properly. Instruments that fail the performance test are tested a second time to confirm the results. Verification report will be issued to the client upon test completion; verification sticker will be affixed to the monitor.

Quality Control (QC) Spike Testing of Passive Radon Measuring Instruments**

Done on an ongoing basis to verify the devices and measurement systems are still operating within your QA/QC standards and specifications.

If you are a registered CNRPP or NRPP analytical laboratory your quality control must include regular calibrations and device spike testing (3% of the total device volume).
